Savotta Kantamus 40L Backpack
The Savotta Kantamus 40L backpack is made to be a versatile multi-day pack designed to handle demanding loads. “Kantamus” is Finnish for “a carried load”, typically something a bit heavier that you carry along. The Kantamus is an all-around general-purpose pack suitable for a variety of users because of its modularity and compression. Built with an internal aluminium frame, this pack provides excellent support and weight distribution, making it ideal for extended trips where carrying efficiency is key.
The main compartment of the bag is 40L with an additional 8L in the lid. Your Kantamus will fit sleep systems, food, water and spare clothing for a couple of days without the use of numerous external attachment points for pouches and additional gear.
The main compartment is accessed through a roll-top closure and a vertical zipper on the right side. The main compartment is separated with a space for your hydration bladder, with two tie-down loops and a hydration bladder attachment webbing tab on the top to keep it snug. Each side of the pack contains a tube port.
The left-hand side vertical zipper leads into a large flat compartment on the front of the bag, separate from the main compartment. Perfect for flat-packed gear such as tarps, ponchos, small blankets or other sleeping systems. The outside of the pack has generous PALS webbing for the modularity of pouches and gear on the side and front of the pack. The bottom of the pack has two rows of webbing for attaching gear using packing straps or elastic cord. Two side compression straps with SR buckles on each side of the pack offer compression to the bag so you can carry long, bulky tools and equipment or other additional loads such as the Hatka 12L. To assist in carrying long tools or equipment such as axes, machetes and hiking poles each side of the bag includes side pouches which are relatively flat and low. Not intended to carry water bottles but to stop tools and equipment from moving around when your pack is on.
The lid has a large 8L main compartment accessible from a zipper. Perfect to put rainwear, puffy jackets, a headtorch and other gear. The top of the lid has an elastic cord for retention of light gear, whilst the underside has two rows of PALS webbing, which would be suitable for attaching sleeping or other gear. The front lid has a small zippered pocket with a D-ring to attach trinkets and valuables. With the Kantamus, the lid can be removed and, for example, replaced with the Savotta Askare or Hatka 12L, given you have the correct buckles (not included).
An aluminium tubular frame is located internally within the pack to ensure rigidity and effective weight transfer, as the closed cell foam pad provides additional support and can double up as a seat pad. The pack features padded shoulder straps with load lifters, a fully adjustable hip belt with PALS webbing, and a 50mm Berg clip buckle to enhance the comfort and stability of the bag.
The pack is constructed from high-quality 1000D Cordura, with some areas made from a lighter 500D Cordura to save weight. However, this pack is virtually indestructible. Thoughtful features such as covered zippers with dual pullers and easily replaceable buckles and straps make field repairs simple, extending the service life of the pack.
The pack weighs 2.4 kg and measures 30 x60 x 22 cm (W x H x D), and at 40L is the pack that will serve you a lifetime in the toughest conditions. Whether you are on a multi-day adventure or simply need a pack that can withstand heavy loads comfortably, this pack won’t let you down.
Backed by a 5-year workmanship warranty, it will be a reliable pack for years to come.
