How to Use a Bow Drill:

Here's how it works: you take your spindle, then you take your fireboard, which is a flat piece of wood with a small divot carved into it, and you place the pointed end of the spindle into the divot.

Next, you take your bow, which is a curved stick with a piece of cord or sinew tied to each end, and you wrap the cord around the spindle. You hold the bow with one hand and the handhold, which is a small piece of wood, with the other hand. Then you start sawing the bow back and forth, which causes the spindle to spin rapidly against the fireboard.

The friction generated by the spinning spindle creates heat (this is friction fire making), and if you do it just right, you'll start to see some smoke coming from the divot. Keep going, and eventually, you'll create an ember that you can transfer to a nest of tinder that sits beneath your fireboard, blow into your tinder till it flames.

Using a bow drill takes some practice. When you have the right materials and you get the hang of it, it's a reliable way to start a fire, even in wet or cold conditions. So if you're out in the woods and you need a fire, give a bow drill a try. It's a time-honored technique that's been used by folks all around the world for generations, and there's something really satisfying about starting a fire the old-fashioned way.
