Kappler ChemTape Chemical Resistant Tape
Chemical-Resistant Sealing Tape for Chemical Protective, Hazmat & CBRN Suits
Kappler’s patented chemical-resistant ChemTape® is an essential PPE component for anyone working in hazardous environments. Designed specifically to reinforce the vulnerable “interfaces” of a protective suit, ChemTape seals the gaps where hazmat suits, chemical protective suits or CBRN suits meet gloves, boots, and the edge of a respirator or gas-mask facepiece.
These connection points are the weakest part of any hazmat suit, chemical suit or CBRN suit, and ChemTape provides a reliable, field-proven seal to help maintain a near-airtight internal environment while still allowing full mobility.
Engineered for hazmat response, decontamination teams, defence, industrial chemical handling, emergency services and disaster preparedness, ChemTape provides superior chemical resistance and far greater reliability than improvised options like duct tape.
- Lab tested against chemical warfare agents Nerve (VX), Sarin (GB), and Mustard (HD) with a minimum holdout time of 8 hours
- Protects against splashes, aerosolized threats, and exposure to particulates at the vulnerable interfaces in your PPE gear, ideal for sealing leakages in HAZMAT, CBRN suits
- Easy to apply and remove, won’t damage reusable protective garments.
Manufactured in the USA and trusted worldwide by emergency services, hazmat teams, industrial chemical handlers and defence organisations.

Applications
Kappler ChemTape® is designed specifically for use with protective apparel.
Ideal for taping around gloves, boots, respirators, and storm flaps, ChemTape® can also be used as a means of identification thanks to its high-visibility yellow color, as well as for shelter-in-place applications. It’s even suitable for pipe sealing and shelter or tent repair.
ChemTape® is primarily designed to enhance the liquid holdout of interfaces and closures on protective garments. It can also reduce the potential of gross liquid flow at interfaces. It should NOT be relied upon to provide a liquid-tight seal, but it can dramatically improve protection from liquid threats, splashes, aerosols, and particulates.
ChemTape® is 2 inches wide with pressure-sensitive adhesive, ensuring wide and direct coverage when applied, with only the tape’s flat edge exposed to airborne threats that could degrade the adhesive. Once applied, it will remain firmly adhered yet can be removed without damaging reusable protective garments.
ChemTape® provides exceptional protection from a full battery of chemical, biological, and gas threats.
How to Use Kappler ChemTape
- Clean and dry the suit interface area.
- Apply ChemTape using firm, even pressure.
- Make sure the entire width of the tape adheres securely to the surface.
- Avoid wrinkles or folds - use long, continuous sections wehre possible.
- After application, inspect the sealed area. When applied correctly, ChemTape® will sit flat and smooth, without creases or lifted edges.
- After operations, remove and dispose of tape according to hazmat/CBRN safety protocol.
Storage Instructions
Store Kappler ChemTape® in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight. The recommended storage temperature is 23ºC. According to the manufacturer, there is no evidence of performance loss or adhesive degradation when ChemTape® is stored under ideal conditions.
ChemTape® can tolerate storage temperatures up to 49ºC; however, prolonged exposure to elevated heat may accelerate ageing or reduce long-term performance. When stored properly, ChemTape maintains its protective characteristics over time that lasts 15 years.
Industrial Chemical Testing
These tests were conducted under controlled laboratory conditions, not under real-world usage scenarios. It’s important to note that the tests were carried out on material samples, not on actual garments. Additionally, all chemicals were tested at a concentration of 95% and at a temperature of 75°F, except for Sodium Hydroxide, which was tested at 50%. Please note: The tests mentioned were conducted in compliance with ASTM standards by independent laboratories. The data presented here is based solely on tests performed on material samples and does not pertain to finished garments.

Kappler ChemTape® – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does ChemTape® create a liquid-tight seal?
ChemTape® provides excellent reinforcement for chemical splash protection at suit interfaces. However, it is not designed for full immersion or for situations where a completely liquid-tight barrier is required. For best results, apply firm, even pressure during application and ensure the tape lies flat without folds or wrinkles.
Does ChemTape® make a protective suit gas-tight?
No. ChemTape® strengthens interface protection but will not convert a protective suit into a gas-tight garment. If gas-tight performance is required, a properly rated protective suit must be used.
How should ChemTape® be applied, and where is it used?
ChemTape® is intended to seal the interfaces and closures of PPE, such as:
- glove-to-sleeve joins
- boot-to-suit or boot-flap areas
- zippers and storm flaps
- respirator or gas-mask hood edges
For correct application:
- Unroll the tape smoothly to the desired length.
- Apply with strong, even pressure (the adhesive is pressure-sensitive).
- Avoid wrinkles or creases.
- Use one continuous strip where possible.
- Tape may be cut with scissors/knife or torn quickly at a right angle by hand.
- Multiple wraps may be needed depending on the hazard level.
Can ChemTape® be reused?
No. ChemTape® is a single-use product and should be discarded after one deployment.
Can removing ChemTape® damage PPE materials?
Possibly. ChemTape® uses a strong, rubber-based adhesive designed for maximum sealing performance.
- On robust or reusable suits, removal typically causes little or no damage.
- On lightweight or disposable fabrics, some tearing or surface damage may occur.
- Always inspect garments carefully after removal, especially if the suit will be reused.
How do chemicals affect ChemTape’s adhesive?
The polyisoprene-based adhesive can be impacted by certain chemicals if exposed directly. Proper application — ensuring minimal adhesive edge exposure — helps maintain performance.
How is ChemTape® different from standard duct tape?
Duct tape is made for general utility tasks and HVAC applications. ChemTape®, by contrast, is engineered specifically to reinforce the chemical resistance of PPE interfaces, providing tested holdout against hazardous liquids and chemical agents. They are not interchangeable.
Will ChemTape® affect glove materials?
Most vulcanized or cured chemical-resistant gloves (e.g., nitrile, neoprene, butyl) are not affected by ChemTape’s adhesive.
Film-based gloves (e.g., 4H, SilverShield) may experience deterioration upon tape removal.
Always check gloves for damage and replace if any degradation is observed.
Can ChemTape® be used to reinforce seams?
Yes. ChemTape® can be applied over serged or bound seams, closures, and other high-risk areas to improve liquid holdout. As always, correct pressure and smooth application are key to performance.
What is the recommended temperature range for storing ChemTape®?
Ideal storage temperature: 23°C (73°F)
Maximum recommended storage temperature: 49°C (120°F)
Extended exposure to higher temperatures may accelerate ageing. As a general guideline, one month stored at 49°C is roughly equivalent to one year at ideal temperatures.
