Savotta Kantamus 60L Backpack
The Savotta Kantamus 60 L is built for the long haul, designed for hikers, bushcrafters, defence personnel, and anyone in Australia who needs a pack that handles real weight day after day. Its name translates to a carried load, and that is exactly its purpose. With a 60 litre main compartment, a 12 litre floating lid, and a modular layout that adapts to any trip, the Kantamus 60 L becomes a dependable partner for multi day missions, long range hikes, and demanding field work.
What makes this pack stand out is the internal aluminium frame that delivers excellent rigidity and weight transfer to the hips. Whether you are carrying camping gear through wet forests, moving bushcraft tools into the backcountry, or loading up for an extended hike, the frame keeps everything stable while the adjustable harness ensures a natural, balanced fit for different body lengths. The padded back panel includes a closed cell foam insert that doubles as a sitting pad, giving you comfort on and off the trail.
Inside, the main compartment is spacious, easy to organise, and accessible from both the roll top and the large side zipper. A dedicated hydration bladder sleeve with dual tube ports keeps water handy, while a spacious flat front compartment is ideal for tarps, ponchos, maps, or other slim essentials that you want to reach fast. The entire exterior is covered in well placed PALS webbing, allowing you to expand the pack with side pouches, GP pockets, tool holders, and mission specific gear.
The floating lid brings an extra 12 litres of storage with two zippered pockets, perfect for stowing rain gear, warm layers, snacks, or valuables. It rises when you pack more, compresses when you carry less, and can even be removed entirely. With compatible small packs like the Hatka 12 L or Askare hip pack, you can turn the Kantamus into a fully modular load carrying system tailored to your activity.
Everything about this pack is made to last. Savotta uses a combination of 1000D and 500D Cordura for outstanding abrasion resistance while keeping weight manageable. Zippers are shielded, stress points are reinforced, and every buckle, strap, and padded element can be replaced without sewing. This makes the Kantamus 60 L not only tough, but repairable in the field or at home, giving you a pack that stays operational for years of hard use.
If you want a backpack that carries heavy loads comfortably, adapts to any environment, and survives real punishment, the Savotta Kantamus 60 L is one of the most capable choices available in Australia today.

Pro-tip: The lid can also be removed and replaced with, for example, the Askare hip pack or a Hatka 12L equipped with suitable buckles (not included with the pack). This allows you to tweak the Kantamus into a modular load-carrying system. To change the lid, you will require four Female PALS-Mount Buckles on the Askare or Hatka and use two 25 mm Male Threaded ITW Nexus Classic Side Release Buckles to go onto the free straps on the back of the pack, which the lid was using previously. Now you have a quick-release system for a 12 L day pack or hip pack.
- Hatka 12 L – attaches under the floating lid or to the side compression straps using four 25mm Female SR Split-Bar or PALS-Mount buckles, or G‑hooks, turning it into a detachable daypack.
- Askare Hip Pack – attaches on the front of the pack via side compression straps with no extra buckles required, acting as a front‑mounted pouch that can be removed and worn on the hip.
- Side Pouches 8 L – plug directly into the PALS webbing on the sides, front, bottom or hip belt for extra storage.
- Sleeping Pad / Roll – secures under the floating lid via the underside PALS webbing or can be lashed externally with the side compression straps.
- Hip Belt Pouches / General Purpose (GP) Pouches – attach to the PALS channels on the padded hip belt for small gear, water bottles or tools.
- Bottom Mounted Gear – two rows of PALS webbing allow attachment of bulky items such as tent poles, rolled mats, sleeping pads or other long gear using straps or cords.
- Elastic Retention on Lid – the top elastic cord can hold light items like jackets or wet gear without additional pouches.
