ith modern conveniences like refrigerators and fast food, people have forgotten how canned food was a way of keeping food for long periods of time. There are some myths and misconceptions about canned food and expiration dates.
This guide should provide clarity on how different canned goods vary in longevity and why Convar’s DosenBistro canned food stands out in terms of quality and durability.
The best before date on canned food is NOT an expiration date
Food can be safely consumed for significantly longer than the date stated on the packaging. The date stated on the packaging is not a date for when the food spoils, but is an indicator of time of when the food will not show any noticeable loss of taste or quality.
Different types of canned food
The composition of food, the way it’s prepared, how it’s processed, materials used in packaging, the production process and reliability of the food manufacturer usually determines food shelf life, from 6 months to 10+ years.
When it comes to canned goods, are different classifications:
- Fully preserved goods (supermarket cans)
- Semi-preserved goods (supermarket cans)
- Dry preserved goods
- Tropical preserved goods
The classification of the type of canned goods is determined by the core temperature reached and the time for which the temperature acts on the food in the can during sterilisation.
The higher the core temperature and the longer the process time, the more microorganisms, bacteria and spores are killed in the food to be preserved.
Supermarket canned food
Manufacturers of supermarket canned food usually plan for the food to be consumed within 6 – 24 months, so they are always either fully preserved or semi-preserved. In order to reduce costs, supermarket canned goods are only produced with the minimum required to last the projected life span, and increasingly thinner material thicknesses of the tinplate or aluminium cans, so the shelf life is limited.
The Convar emergency canned meals difference
To achieve a longer shelf life, more energy and time must be spent on production to reach and maintain higher temperatures.
Convar are experts in the development and production of food intended to be stored for long periods on time (long life food).
Convar food is designed to have an extremely long shelf life under the most challenging conditions. From the selection of raw materials, recipe and packaging, every part of the process is carefully considered for suitability for the necessary production process to meet high quality standards even after long storage periods of over 10 years.
Convar uses thicker cans as their packaging, and all food cooked by Convar for long term storage are classified as tropical preserves, which last a lot longer.
This means that the more intensive heat treatment (longer and/or higher temperatures) also kill thermophilic spores, which results in DosenBistro canned food having best before date 10+ years.
